Bellyfit Instructor Spotlight: Susan Jones

Who are you, and what are your passions?

Hi, I'm Susan. I teach Bellyfit in Mississauga. I am passionate getting old! Sounds crazy, am I right? But what's really crazy is how we approach aging in this country. We eat garbage, we sit on our bums most of the day, and we communicate through technology. Then we demand a pill from our doctor to fix what we broke.

Women can expect to live more than 30 years after menopause. Are we willing to accept a long, slow sad decline into frailty? Not me. No way. These are going to be my best years, my years of adventure. So here's what I'm doing:

Wish me luck, or better yet, join me. Lets change the world, one woman at a time.

What do you love about teaching Bellyfit?

I feel so alive when I move to music! Enthusiasm is contagious, and nothing makes me happier than seeing a room full of woman lose their inhibitions and shake it! And if I can make my participants laugh, well, that's the cherry on my sundae. I also love the accessibility of Bellyfit. You don't have to be a dancer, or an athlete, or have rhythm and co-ordination -- Bellyfit works for all of us, no matter our age, or level of fitness.

What is the most common feedback you receive from your participants about Bellyfit!

I can't tell you how many times I hear, "That was so much fun!" Hey, we're only human, and humans are hard wired for pleasure. If what you're doing to stay in shape doesn't make you feel fantastic, you're not going to do it, or not for long anyway. With Bellyfit the pay-off > perceived effort. It's a blast! And let's not forget the best feedback of all; when participants are so thrilled with Bellyfit they bring a friend along to the next class.

How do you feel Bellyfit supports your lifestyle?

Here's the thing; isolation and loneliness are bad for our health, and can, in fact, kill us. We have a brain programmed to function in groups. It's the reason we feel good when we hang with our friends, and it's the reason we leave a Bellyfit class floating on a natural high. That hour of sweating, dancing, and meditating with other women is life-enhancing and life-sustaining.

What do you think are the qualities that make for a great Bellyfit instructor?

A great Bellyfit instructor brings passion and authenticity to every class. She believes in herself and believes that she makes a difference in the lives of her participants. She loves what she does, and it shows!

What is the #1 thing women can do for their health, other than Bellyfit?

Connect, care, commit. Find a cause, search for spiritual enlightenment, live for others.......whatever gives your life meaning. Stay involved in the world.

Anything else?

I love this quote from Isak Dinesan (author of "Out of Africa"):
Women, when they are old enough to have done with the business of being women, and can let loose their strength, may be the most powerful in the world. Let loose Ladies! Unleash your power!
